The Coming Judgment

By Pastor Dennis Dills

Many have their own ideas about the judgment of God.  Two things men and women push far away from their minds, death and judgment.  We don’t arise in the morning and look forward to dying that day or facing a judgment before an Almighty God before the day ends. But God says in Hebrews 9:27, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"  Based upon the Eternal Word of God there are two future events that are absolutely certain-death and judgment-from which we will not be able to avoid.  Are you prepared for it?

The Word of God:
1.
Teaches judgment as a real definite truth.
2.
Establishes judgment as a Divine fact.
3.
Preaches judgment as a warning to us.

 I. THE CERTAINTY OF JUDGMENT

Look At What Solomon The King Says:

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."

Solomon said “Fear God”.  He did not say if you feel like it or if you want to, he said “Fear God”.  Solomon said “Fear God and keep his commandments”.  He did not say fear God and keep his commandments if you feel like it or if you want to.  There is no choice or option.  This is a definite command.  After ending up the whole book of Ecclesiastes, in which Solomon many times talks about vanity and vexation of spirit, he ends up in the last verse of this book with a warning of judgment where every work and every secret thing whether good or evil is going to come.  Friend there is coming a judgment, make sure you are ready.

Look At What The Lord Jesus Christ Says:

Matthew 11:20-24, "Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:  Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.  But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.  And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.  But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee."

Matthew 12:36-37, "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.  For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."

Matthew 25:31-46, "When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:  And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:  I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.  Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?  Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal."

Look At What The Apostle Paul Says:

Acts 17:30-31, "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead."

2 Corinthians 5:10, "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."

Look At What The Apostle Peter Says:

1 Peter 1:17, "And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:"

1 Peter 4:17-18, "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?  And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?"

2 Peter 3:10, "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

Look At What The Apostle John Says:

1 John 4:17, "Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world."

Revelation 20:11-15, "And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."

II. THOSE WHO ARE TO STAND IN JUDGMENT.

First, the judgment is universal as we have already seen in Acts 17: 31 as stated, “...judge the world in righteousness…” and in Matthew 25:32 as stated, “...And before him shall be gathered all nations:….".  So, from these Scriptures, we can see that there will be a judgment of the whole world and nations as a whole.

Second, the judgment of God will be personal and individual.  I will not be judged for you and you will not be judged for me.  I will not be judged for your deeds and you will not be judged for my deeds.  We will stand before God and give an account of ourselves before the Lord.  Romans 2:5-6, "But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;  Who will render to every man according to his deeds:"

Romans 14:10-13, "But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.  For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.  So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.  Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way."

1 Corinthians 3:8, "Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour."

There are several judgments described in the Word of God.  Some have already taken place and some are future.  Let me list them:

1. The Judgment of Sin on the Cross.  This judgment has already taken place on Calvary when Jesus gave Himself for us on the Cross.  He became sin for us so that we would not have to pay the penalty of sin, which is death. 1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

2. The Judgment of Self.  This is a judgment that we should do of ourselves.  We should take a full inventory of our heart on a regular basis in order to keep ourselves pure and unspotted from the world. Matthew 7:1,2  Judge not, that ye be not judged.  For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3. The Judgment of the Saints.  All the saved will stand before God to give an account of their deeds.  II Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

4. The Judgment of the Nations.  Matthew 25:32,33 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

5. The Judgment of the Devil. Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

6. The Judgment of the Lost. Revelation 20:11-15  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

7. The Judgment of the Earth. II Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

III. WHAT BELIEVERS WILL BE JUDGED FOR.

1. In II Corinthians 5:10 already referred to  we find that we will be judged for our deeds whether they are good or bad.

2. In Matthew 12:36,37 already referred to we find that our words will be judged.  This would include words of anger, lies, jokes, profanity, unkindness, false teaching or any thing that reproaches the Word of God counted as sin.

3. In Ecclesiastes 12:13,14, already referred to, we find that our secrets will be judged.  In other words, those sins no one else knows about, those sins we have forgotten, and those sins we have hidden.

 WHO WILL PERFORM THIS JUDGMENT?

The Word of God informs us that Jesus will be the Judge.  John 5:22, "For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:"

2 Timothy 4:1, "I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;"

The Scriptures are plain, Jesus Christ will be the Judge and He will judge us by the Word of God, which is His Eternal, Inerrant Word.

 THE SENTENCE OF THE JUDGMENT

1. The Sentence will be Final, no appeals.
2.
There will be no short term sentence, it will be eternal.
3.
 There will be no probation.
4.
There will be no plea bargains.

Are you prepared for this judgment?  You can be by calling upon the Lord today and repenting of all your sin.  Bow your head and do it now while you have the opportunity.

2 Peter 1:20,21 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
